Your Beginner's Guide

💃 What is bachata?

Bachata is a partner dance from the Dominican Republic, danced to a distinctive guitar-led 4/4 beat. It's known for its close connection, hip movements, and romantic feel. Most beginners can social dance within 6–8 weeks.

🎵 The 3 main styles

Dominican

Traditional style, footwork-focused, danced in a small square

Moderna

Most popular worldwide, mix of footwork and turns

Sensual

Body wave movement, close connection, more theatrical

👟 What to wear

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in
  • Shoes with a smooth sole — dance sneakers, heels or leather-soled
  • Avoid thongs/sandals — they won't stay on when you spin
  • Bring a spare shirt — you will sweat!

🤝 Do I need a partner?

Almost every studio here says no partner required. Studios rotate you through different partners during class — actually better for learning. At socials, just ask anyone — the community is welcoming.

💰 What does it cost?

  • Free classes — Salsa Foundation Melbourne, Bachata Corazon intro, La Bodega Fridays
  • Drop-in — $15–$30 per class
  • Term passes — $89–$273 for course
  • Trial weeks — Most studios offer 1 week unlimited for $20–$30

🗓️ First class tips

  • Arrive 10 minutes early to sign in
  • The teacher starts from absolute zero — don't panic
  • You'll learn the basic step in the first 15 minutes
  • Rotate partners frequently
  • Stay for the social after class — practice is everything
  • It's normal to feel awkward. Everyone was a beginner once

📈 How long to learn?

  • 2–4 weeks — Basic step, timing, simple partner work
  • 6–8 weeks — Confident enough to social dance
  • 6 months — Feeling smooth, adding style
  • 1–2 years — Intermediate, attending festivals

🌏 The community

Australia has festivals in Sydney (Bailando), Melbourne (World Bachata Festival), Brisbane (Level Up), Gold Coast (Bachata Lab events), Sunshine Coast and more. Once you start, you'll find a welcoming community that travels interstate just to dance together. Check the !
