🎵 What is Bachata?
Bachata is a partner dance from the Dominican Republic, danced to a distinctive guitar-led 4/4 beat. It's known for its close connection, hip movements, and romantic feel. Originally from the streets of the Dominican Republic, it's now one of the most popular social dances in the world.
🇩🇴 Dominican
The original style. Footwork-focused, playful and rhythmic. Danced in a small square pattern. Lots of hip movement.
✨ Moderna
Most popular worldwide. A mix of footwork and turn patterns. Great for social dancing. Most Australian classes teach this.
💃 Sensual
Body waves, dips and close connection. More theatrical. Usually taught after you have the basics down.
👟 Your First Class
What to wear
✅Comfortable clothes you can move in
✅Shoes with a smooth sole — dance sneakers, heels or leather-soled shoes
✅Bring a spare shirt — you will sweat!
❌Avoid thongs/sandals — they won't stay on when you spin
What to expect
1️⃣Arrive 10 mins early to sign in
2️⃣Teacher starts from absolute zero — no panic needed
3️⃣You'll learn the basic step in the first 15 minutes
4️⃣Classes rotate partners — you'll meet everyone
5️⃣Stay for the social after — practice is everything
💡 It's normal to feel awkward. Everyone was a beginner once. The bachata community in Australia is one of the most welcoming you'll find anywhere.
🤝 Do I Need a Partner?
No — and you'll actually learn faster without one. Almost every studio in Australia says no partner required. Classes rotate you through different partners, which means you learn to dance with anyone.
At social nights, you just ask anyone for a dance — it's completely normal and expected. A simple "would you like to dance?" is all it takes. No one ever says no.
💰 What Does It Cost?
Free
Trial classes at many studios. La Bodega Fridays (Melbourne), Bachata Corazon intro, Latin Nights By The Bay (Sydney)
$15–30
Casual drop-in per class. Most studios across Australia
$20–30
Trial week — unlimited classes for one week at most studios

Intermediate dancer. Attending festivals. Dancing with anyone, anywhere in the world.
🙏 Social Dance Etiquette
✅
Ask anyone — "Would you like to dance?" is always the right approach
✅
Thank your partner after every dance, no matter what level they are
✅
Keep it safe — don't do moves your partner hasn't agreed to
✅
Deodorant — you will be dancing close. Please.
✅
Don't teach on the social floor unless asked — just dance and have fun
✅
It's okay to say no to a dance — no explanation needed, no hard feelings
